Understanding Binocular Specifications

  • Magnification: How many times closer or larger an object appears. Higher isn't always better, ask us about the drawbacks.
  • Objective Lens: Diameter of the front lenses in millimeters. Larger lenses gather more light but is heavier.
  • Field of View: Width of area visible expressed in degrees. Wider is better for tracking moving subjects.
  • Eye Relief: Distance your eye can be from the eyepiece while seeing full field of view. Important for eyeglass wearers.
  • Close Focus: Minimum distance at which objects can be clearly focused.

Choosing the Right Binoculars

  • Birdwatching: 8x42 offers good balance of magnification and field of view.
  • Hiking/Travel: Compact 8x25.
  • Stargazing: Larger objectives and/better quality of glass will really brighten up those celestial objects and make them pop.
  • Marine/Boating: Lower magnification and image stabilization help when your craft is pitching and heaving.
  • Safari/Wildlife: 8x42 or 10x42 for distance viewing while remaining portable. Good quality glass is important when you want to get the most enjoyment out of your once in a lifetime trip!
